Always Listening

I am listening for your footsteps
on the stones along the path,
I am listening for the echo
of your cheerful ready laugh.
I am listening for the whisper of endearments
I am listening for the sigh
that used to follow every kiss.
I am listening for the heartbeat
that once throbbed against my chest,
and deep within my pillow
my hungry ears are pressed
to still the sound of emptiness
that now is in my heart.
I sleep and visit dreamland
beyond some distant star.
